How to restore the Promasys database from a backup

This knowledge base entry describes how to restore the Promasys database from a backup file.

In general there is NO NEED to restore the database and this procedure should only be followed under specific circumstances, e.g. after hardware failure. It is recommended that you contact Promasys before trying to restore the Promasys database.

The Promasys database contains the information of all protocols you have defined including the definition as well as the data entered into Promasys. This implies that you can only restore the complete database. There is no option to restore only information related to a single protocol.

f you restore the Promasys database, you will need to re-apply any changes and re-enter any data into Promasys which were made after the time of the backup. Any changes made to Promasys after the time the backup was made will be lost!

As indicated earlier: you cannot restore data for a single protocol! You can only restore the complete database. If you would like to review information in an 'older' version of the Promasys database, it is recommended that you restore Promasys on a separate (temporary) server and NOT to the production server!

In order to restore the Promasys database follow the next steps:

  • Shutdown the database currently running
  • Start the Progress explorer (e.g. from the Windows start menu > All Programs > OpenEdge)
  • Connect to the Progress server and STOP the Promasys Database, the Nameserver and the application server.
  • Close the Progress Explorer window
  • Restore the database from the backup files using the PROREST utility
  • Open the PROENV tool from the Windows start menu > All Programs > OpenEdge. A command prompt window will open.
  • Verify that you are in the folder where the Promasys database is installed by issuing the command CD
  • c. Restore the Promasys database by issuing the command:
    PROREST PROMASYS
    WARNING: If you run this command on your production server, you will overwrite your existing Promasys database!
  • Restart the server.
  • After server restart verify that the Promasys database, the Nameserver and the Appserver are running using the Progress Explorer tool
  • Use the Promasys client to verify that you can connect to Promasys and login to Promasys

Additional information on the backup/restore process can be fond in the Progress manuals which are available on the Progress CD. Look for the manual called "OpenEdge® Data Management: Database Administration". This manual contains a section on "Protecting your data", "Restoring a database".

Please remember that there is normally NO NEED to restore Promasys this way! It is recommended that you contact Promasys before trying to restore the Promasys database.
